Melania Trump paid ‘substantial damages’ by The Daily Telegraph over false claims

The Daily Telegraph has apologised and paid “substantial damages” to Melania Trump after publishing an article containing false statements.

On Saturday, the paper apologised “unreservedly” for the content of a cover story published on 19 January in its weekly magazine supplement.

“As a mark of our regret we have agreed to pay Mrs Trump substantial damages as well as her legal costs,” The Daily Telegraph said.

It said it falsely characterised Mrs Trump’s father’s personality and that he “was not a fearsome presence and did not control the family”.

The paper also retracted the claim that the 48-year-old’s modelling career was unsuccessful before she met Donald Trump.

“Mrs Trump was not struggling in her modelling career before she met Mr Trump, and she did not advance in her career due to the assistance of Mr Trump,” it added.

It also accepted that the article wrongly claimed that her parents and sister relocated to New York in 2005 to live in buildings owned by Mr Trump.
